Why do people misuse the term "selfless"?

Many people seem to believe selflessness is synonyms with altruism, when in reality the only truly selfless creatures are animals and children, and they are never altruistic. An ego is absolutely necessary in order to do good for others, because the ego boost one is rewarded with by being altruistic cannot be given to an egoless creature.
