Explain the facebook online now grid at the left side of your news feed.?

The grid on the corner of my facebook page always disturbs me. Is it supposed to be a box with your closest friends? The people you stalk the most? The people you chat with the most? Or a mix of everything? If you can determine an algorithm for it, that'd be even cooler.
