Do stretch marks ever really go away?

I've been told by some people that they never really go away and once you get them, they're there forever. But others have told me that they will fade with time and certain lotions and oils. I'm about 38 weeks pregnant and just started getting them a few weeks ago even though I occasionally used Palmer's oil for stretch marks and scars... does any product really work? And is it true they sometimes just fade?
